It is estimated that up to 90% of women now use natural therapies, for relaxation and to relieve the aches and pains of pregnancy or to aid progress and ease pain in labour. However, it’s important to use them carefully – just because they’re natural doesn’t mean they’re safe for everyone. Many – aromatherapy oils and herbs in particular – should be avoided in pregnancy unless prescribed by a qualified practitioner.

Many of our past students have joined our Licensed Consultancy scheme and set up their own private practices offering specialist services such as moxibustion for breech, natural induction for post-dates pregnancy or nausea and vomiting.

Each therapy is a professional discipline in its own right, taking several years to learn. Our courses cover a small aspect of each therapy, applying it specifically to midwifery practice, subject to managerial approval, local clinical guidelines and indemnity insurance cover.

Who teaches our natural therapies courses?

Denise Tiran, author of Complementary Therapies in Maternity Care, an evidence-based approach (2018), teaches many of these study days. She is assisted by Dr Harry Chummun on the Scientific basis of complementary therapies day, and by midwives who have gone on to develop specialist services for women, both in the NHS and in private practice, who join us to share their experiences.

Here’s what our past students say:

The moxibustion study day was so much more than just the 'how to' of moxibustion. I developed the skills required to successfully offer moxibustion in my own private practice and the confidence to price the treatment appropriately." Lydia Gerrie, Practice development midwife, Hertfordshire.
