Aromatherapy uses concentrated plant oils, usually administered in massage, water or by inhalation. When you smell the aromas, chemicals in the oils pass to the lungs and round the body and have various physical and emotional effects. Many oils should not be used when pregnant or breastfeeding.

Regular antenatal aromatherapy or massage has been shown to ease labour pain, reduce stress hormones and increase birth hormones. Many maternity units now offer aromatherapy for childbirth.

What’s different about Expectancy’s aromatherapy course for midwives?

This is the definitive course, from an international expert with over 25 years’ experience of teaching aromatherapy to midwives. The course enables you to implement aromatherapy in the NHS within the parameters of midwifery registration, the NMC Code and institutional use. We combine enjoyable practical work with serious academic and professional debate on safety, accountability and evidence-based practice.
